1. Gorilla
In this gorilla image, there are multi-colored bands in the shadows on the side of the gorilla's head (marked here for easier identification).

Since there is too much color variation in the shadows, we cannot use the line tool. Instead, we adjust the Shadow sliders until we can no longer see significant bands. The curve changes also make the shadows blacker.

Example 2.: Light Switch
The light switch image has blue horizontal bands across it (indicated below for ease of identification).

There is no shadow to speak of, so the Shadow Tool will be ineffective. However, the smooth color of the white wall makes it ideal for use with the Line Tool.
Draw a line from top to bottom of the image so that the color varies smoothly along the line. If the first line leaves some bands, you can draw additional vertical lines through just those bands.
